Paint Shop #1 Correction
That Extra Serif !
A thank you goes out to Paul Cutler III editor of The SpeedWitch modeling magazine published by the New Haven Railroad Historical and Technical Association for pointing out a mistake made in Paint Shop #1.
The RS-3 painted in the McGinnis black and red-orange scheme had an extra serif on the letter "N" that was not present on New Haven RS-3's as circled in the photo below.
Microscale decal sheet #87-68 has both a version with and without this serif on the sheet side by side. Fortunately the incorrect "NH" was applied only to one side of the hood.
The fix was a quick masking job then a few light coats of black over the serif followed by a coat of Dullcote.
All is prototypical now and engine #555 is back at work on the layout.

Interesting! I had never noticed it. Does anyone know why the serif was 'omitted'? Was it by design or was it a paint department mistake? I would have expected a serif just like the one on the upper left of the N to make the letter similar to the H, or the lower left serifs omitted on the N to match the right side of the N for balance.
ReplyDeleteThe lack of the serif on the lower right of the "N" is how Herbert Matter designed the logo for the New Haven Railroad. The EMD GP-9's the railroad had is the only place that the extra serif was used that I know of. Maybe this was a painting mistake at EMD when these were built?
ReplyDeleteI just made the mistake of applying the wrong decal and never noticed it until it was pointed out.
Joe
Joe, I did the same thing on an RS-11 years ago. Don't for get the N on the front of the FL-9's had the extra serif as well.

You are right Jim, never really noticed that. Are there more that I am unaware of? Guess what we have learned here is not to take any serif advice from Joe Smith!
